Communion
Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of each liturgical season,
as well as on World Wide Communion Sunday, Christmas Eve and at the
Easter Vigil. Our communion is an “Open Table.” People
of all faiths, denominations and ages are invited to join in receiving
communion. In keeping with the concept of a “Ministry of the
People,” lay members of the congregation as well as ordained
ministers serve the communion elements.
The Bloor Street United Church tradition is for the congregation to
be served at stations using the “Intinction” method. (bread
dipped in wine). According to ones preference, both wine and grape
juice are offered.
Reading The Lesson
In keeping with the principle of Ministry of the People, it is a
tradition at Bloor Street for members of the congregation to read
the lesson at Sunday worship. The lesson may be from the Hebrew Scriptures,
the Gospels, the Epistles, or a psalm (which might also have musical
interludes). The Minister who is preaching that Sunday will provide
you with a typed transcript of the Biblical version that is preferred,
in advance so you can practice, and check pronunciation of Hebrew
names, for instance. Tina Edwards co-ordinates the readers so if you
would like the opportunity to read from Scripture please contact her
in the church office. Your name will be added to our list of readers
and you will be contacted in due course.
The Prayers of the People
Usually a lay person leads the Prayers of the People at Bloor Street.
Some people make up their own prayers inspired by concerns of the
day, the sermon topic and the Scripture reading, but the Ministers
can provide books of suggested prayers.
The prayer leader is encouraged to speak with the Minister who is
preaching the week before to discuss the gist of the sermon and how
it might affect the prayers of the people.
If you would like the opportunity to lead the congregation in prayer
please contact Tina Edwards. Your name will be added to our list of
pray-ers, and you will be called.
