Quilting

The quilters group was formed several years ago as a result of the community building efforts of an enthusiastic student minister, Susan Shantz. Half a dozen women came together to learn or to hone their quilting skills under Susan’s experienced leadership. When Susan left Bloor Street to become an ordained minister, our group continued to flourish. We took on several projects for the congregation including pulpit and lectern banners (called antependia), and ordination stoles for each candidate for ministry coming from Bloor Street’s congregation.

Many of us find the act of quilting itself to be a spiritual one, and an outlet for expressing our theology in textile art. In many respects the group acts as a source of pastoral care for its members as well as a creative outlet for some of the talented and creative women in our congregation.

Join the Choir!

If you love to sing, consider joining the choir. There are no auditions, you can join anytime, and some rudimentary knowledge of how to read music is an asset. As well as leading the congregation in the hymns, we sing anthems ranging from Renaissance motets to contemporary pieces including some composed by our Music Director. The choir (and congregation) have sung in many different languages, including French, Spanish, Ojibwa, Inuktitut, German, Korean, Latin, Xosa, and Zulu – and of course English.

Choir rehearsal is held on Tuesday evenings at St. Matthew’s United Church, 729 St. Clair Ave. W. near Christie.

If you are interested in joining the choir, please email David Passmore: [email protected] or [email protected] or speak with them after the service for more information.
