Latest news

Ken ([email protected])  is taking coffee orders for the month of January.

Please send your order by Sunday, January 22. Delivery and pick-up should be available starting on Monday, January 23.

Please note that the price of the coffee will be increasing this year as the cost of the beans from Guatemala has increased. The price for the coffee this month will be $15 for a 450g (1 pound) bag with an increase to $16 starting on February 1.

Ken says, “While I always hesitate to raise prices, I feel that the coffee is still a relative bargain compared to what you may pay for a bag of coffee at your local corner coffee shop. In addition, the couple of dollars I make on each bag continues to be used to buy food baskets for families in communities in and around El Triunfo in Guatemala. Later today I will be spending over $700 on food which will be delivered to 45 families tomorrow.”

The coffee comes in a medium roast or a dark roast and in beans or ground. Please specify your preferences. (Sorry – no decaf – and gift bags are not available this year.)

As you know, Café Justicia is Fair Trade, shade-grown, organic coffee produced on the volcanic slopes surrounding Lake  Atiltán in the Guatemalan highlands. The coffee is produced by members of the Campesino Committee of the Highlands (CCDA).  Further information about Café Justicia is online

December 28, 202

Dear friends,

This morning we delivered food baskets to 48 families in El Triunfo and surrounding villages. The baskets (actually bags) contained staples such as rice, pasta, oatmeal, coffee, cooking oil, and soap.

For the Christmas season we added in a type of Christmas cake and a can of peaches which is used to prepare the traditional ponche (or fruit punch) which is made both on Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. Santa Ken made an appearance bringing gifts of small toys and candy for any children who were encountered along the way.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the both the purchase of the food baskets and the middle school in El Triunfo. Tomorrow I will be having lunch with the teachers and the director of the school I’m looking forward to hearing from them in advance of the start of the school year in January.

If you would like to support the food baskets, please send your donation directly to me. Today’s delivery, including the use of the pick-up truck for 2 hours, cost almost $1,000.

If you would like to make a donation to the school to help pay the monthly salaries of the teachers here’s the link to donate online: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/casa-pueblito/

(If you are donating online, please indicate the amount, then under “Apply your donation to a specific fund set up by this charity” select the second option which is “El Triunfo School.” You may also wish to indicate that your donation is for Ken’s School in the note.)

For those who prefer to send in a cheque payable to Casa-Pueblito, please note that they have a new address.

Early next month we will also be purchasing new backpacks for the staff and teachers containing essential supplies such as pens, markets, highlighters, binders, tape and paper.

Thanks for your support
